Tianjin University, known as Peiyang
University in its early days, was founded on October
2, 1895. It was the first institution of higher learning
in the history of modern Chinese education.Peiyang
University changed its name to Tianjin University
in 1951 after the Hebei Institute of Technology merged
into it.
For more than 100 years, the university
has trained more than 80 thousand senior qualified
personnel for the country. Most of them have become
pillars of strength or backbones in various circles
and made great contributions to the establishment
and development in a variety of areas and to the cause
of socialist construction. The university is well-staffed
and nestled on a greened and afforested beautiful
campus with an area of 137 hectares and 780 thousand
square meters of floor buildings. The two university
libraries have 26 thousand square meters of floor
buildings and a collection of 1.74 million volumes
of books.
Nankai
University was established in 1919, has a campus
that occupies 1,458,694 square meters and building
areas that cover 765,965 square meters. The founders
were the famous patriotic educators, Zhang Bo
Lin and Yen Xiu. During the Second World War against
Japan, Nankai University, Beijing University and
Qinghua University formed the world famous Southwest
Joint University, known as the BeiChen Institute.

an open way. Since the 7th National Five-year
Plan, the university has established cooperative
relations in running school with quite a few
cities, provinces and enterprises.

At the same time, it has also strengthened
its cooperation in the areas of sophisticated science
and technology with some transitional corporations and
signed agreements of inter-university academic cooperation
with more than 74 institutions of higher education of
25 countries and regions for academic exchanges, joint
research, and jointly training graduates. In order to
meet the new century, the university has worked its
general objective geared towards the 21st century, that
is, in the year of 2010 or a bit longer, the university
will develop into an outstanding socialist university
which will reach or nearly reach the level of a first-rate
international university.
Having the future in view, all the people at this university
unite as one and forging ahead courageously and striving
to take the lead in creating new excellencies in the
international competitions of knowledge and economy
in the coming 21st century.
Education
The university has a strong contingent of faculty members.
Of 1,800 teaching staff members, 1,200 are professors
and associate professors. There are 11 schools, more
than 30 specialties for undergraduates, 74 programs
for master¡¯s degree students, 37 programs for doctoral
degree students and 8 post-doctoral research programs.
Of 16,000 students, 2,500 are master¡¯s and doctoral
students. The Administrators¡¯ Training Center of Higher
Engineering Education of the Ministry of Education is
also located at this university. A complete system talented
personnel with bachelor¡¯s, master¡¯s and doctoral degrees
and an educational system of three-in-one combination
of regular education, adult education , and vocational
and technical education have taken shape in the university.
The School of Graduate Studies is one of the first taking
in doctoral students in China.
Research & Development
The university has a strong contingent of researchers
with actual strength. Professional researchers are more
than 800, and concurrent researchers are more than 2,000.
There are over 100 laboratories, 48 research institutes,
15 experiment and engineering development centers, of
which 5 are national key laboratories, 1 national engineering
research center, 2 national new technology popularization
centers, and 7 research and development centers of national
new technology and open laboratories at ministry and
commission level. Since our nation carried out the Open
And Reform Policy, more than 1500 projects is appraised
by our university,in which more than 70 have won the
National Natural Science Award, the National Invention
Award and the Award of National Science and Technology
Progress. Of these research projects, 235 have applied
patents, of which 165 have been patented. The annual
funds for scientific and technological activities at
this university is more than 100 million after 1994,
and the amount of financial aid that the university
receives from the National Natural Science foundation
every year is always among the first three of the similar
universities. A well-staffed and well-equipped research
system for development in depth has successfully formed
in the university, which includes basic, applied and
development researches.
International Exchanges
