Tianjin Foreign Language Studies University, located on No.117, Machang Road, Hexi District, one of the busiest sections of the city, is on the east of "Little White Building", the business center of Tianjin. Tianjin Foreign Language Studies University, one of the three Foreign Language Studies Universities and colleges in North China, is the university having multi-language, multi-speciality and multi-level directly under Tianjin government.

The university's main task is to train professionals who are well developed morally, intellectually and physically, and have a good command of foreign languages and basic knowledge of related speciality, serving Tianjin's needs of open economy and exchange of arts, science and technology.

Qinghuangdao Foreign Languages College, the predecessor of Tianjin Foreign Language Studies University, was founded in May of 1964. In the summer of 1965, it moved to Baoding, Hebei Province and was renamed Hebei Foreign Language Specialized School. In June of 1974, being authorized by the State Department, Tianjin Foreign Language Studies University was founded.

The university has a total area 10.3 ha., of which 55,321 square meters are the floorage. There are a lot of Europe-style buildings in the campus. Beautiful and quiet, the school is a perfect place for foreign language study and research.

At present, the University has a strong teaching staff, with 200 teachers, among whom are 57 professors and associate professors, 90 lecturers. Over ten foreign scholars or professors are invited each year to teach at the university.

The university uses modern teaching methods and advanced foreign language audio-visual equipments. Students can do audio and visual exercises in 8 language laboratories and the Audio-Visual Center, which can hold some 300 people. The university's library, ranking among the most rich in universities and colleges of Tianjin in collection of foreign language material, has a collection of over 310,000 books and 600 periodicals in both Chinese and foreign languages. And there are one Chinese reading room and one foreign language reading room in the library. Moreover, every department has its own reference room providing service to teachers and students.

The university has 5 departments: English Department, Japanese Department, Department of French, Russian and Spanish, Germany Department, as well as Second English Department. There is also a Chinese Program to teach Chinese to foreign students in the university.

The student enrollment is over one thousand, including graduate students, students who have taken either a 4-year or a 2-year course, international students and so on. The guideline of the university's education is to give first place to undergraduate education, developing short 2- to 3- year higher education, graduate education and adult education properly. And the university also undertakes the foreign languages self-taught examination and TOEFL, GRE examination.

Being the open university, Tianjin Foreign Language Studies University attaches great importance to international cultural and academic exchange, and has established cooperative and exchange relationship with over 6 universities in Japan, USA, France, German etc.

Tianjin Foreign Language School, which is under Tianjin Foreign Language Studies University, admits students graduated from primary schools and offers six-year education for them. In order to give full play to the university's advantages, the university established the Translation Research Institute.

Moreover, there are three factories under the university, among which, the printing house has ability to print out the characters of Chinese, English, French, Germany Russian and so on.
