(3) The Dule Temple

The Dule Temple, located on the Xidajie Street in the the Jixian County seat, occupies an area of 10,500 square metres. The main structures are the front gate and the Guanyin (Goddess of Mercy) Hall. It was first built during the Tang Dynasty, and reconstructed in 984, the second year in the Tonghe reign-period of the Liao Dynasty. Elegant, magnificent and unique in many ways, it is China's most ancient tall wooden structure still extant today. Viewed from outside, the 23-metre high Guanyin Hall is two-storyed.

But in fact, it has three, the third being hidden from the outside. The ground floor, rectangular in shape, measures 5 bays by 4 bays. In its centre stands a statue of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy with eleven faces. On both sides are several attendant Bodhisattivas. On the walls of the four sides are mural paintings of the 16 arhats and Ming Wang (God of the State). Under the eaves of the hall hangs a wooden board inscribed with a calligraphy by Li Taibai, the well-known Tang poet, reading "The Guanyin Hall".

(4) The Dagukou Battlement

The Dagukou Battlement stood 60 kilometers southeast of the city of Tianjin. The battlement was first built during the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty and enlarged after the Opium War. There were five large batteries. When China was invaded by the Allied Forces of Eight Powers in 1900 the batteries were dismantled.
